South Wales & Monmouthshire Numismatic Society

Catchment area:
The Society is the only one in South Wales and draws its membership from Swansea, Bridgend, Cardiff, Newport and the South Wales valleys.

The South Wales and Monmouthshire Society was formed in 1958 and in November, 1998 celebrated its 40th anniversary with a grand party and the striking of a commemorative coin by Grunal the Moneyer showing on the obverse the society emblem. The Society was formed at the National Museum of Wales at a meeting chaired by the late George Boon, but soon moved to Newport where it has remained ever since.

The society has sixty members and enjoys an annual programme which consists of five or six lectures, quarterly auctions, an inter-society quiz with our near neighbours Bath and Bristol Numismatic Society for the Anthony Halse Shield, an open meeting for the public valuation and identification of coins, tokens, medals and bank notes, a summer barbecue, and a Christmas dinner.

Member’s interests range from Roman coins and history which reflects the strong Roman influence at nearby Caerleon and Caerwent, hammered coinage, patterns and proofs, medals, bank notes, and Welsh tokens and paranumismatica.
